This work was written for Lee Heuermann and Shauna Rolston and was premiered at Yale University in 1993. The cello part calls for some harmonized humming from the cellist to create a chordal background for the voice at one point. The work sets a gorgeous text of Jouve.

soar - for cello and piano
soar was written for Christian Wojtowicz in late 2004 and premiered in May 2005 in Hobart, Tasmania. In 2006 I took the work and orchestrated it as a cello concerto which accentuates the linear, dialogue-like qualities of the work.

rive - for clarinet, violin and piano
I wrote this work for the acclaimed Verdehr Trio several years ago. SIne that time they have played it all over the world including, recently, at The Phillips Collection in Washington DC that The Washington Post remarked was a performance that was ‘a sometimes growling, sometimes melancholic rendition of Douglas Knehans's "Rive" [that] beautifully closed [the concert] out.’
