SYMPHONIC BAND/WIND ENSEMBLE CONSORTIUM COMMISSION
COMPOSER: Douglas Knehans www.douglasknehans.com/
PROJECT: A powerful, dramatic and significant new composition for large symphonic band, duration. c. 15:00 to 20:00 minutes. Based on/inspired by the last garden in Aleppo—a tremendously poignant byproduct of the humanitarian tragedy in Syria, the final green space that gave some semblance of normalcy, tranquility and hope finally falls to bombing, as, tragically, does its optimistic and lovely owner, Abu Ward—and titled The Last Garden of Aleppo. The character of the work will be sectional and programmatic with elegiac passages, powerful rhythmic passages and most of all keening and beautiful melodies. The work will be expressive, colorful, powerful, melodic and dramatic and will appeal to the players and audiences alike. The work will be in five movements:
- Father of the Flowers
- The Sound of War is Like Beethoven’s music
- This Tree Will Live and We Will Live Despite Everything
- The Love of Ibrahim—Desolation
- The Essence of the World is a Flower

MOTIVATION: Douglas Knehans’ last significant work for large symphonic band was written in 1994. This was a work for large wind ensemble and was commissioned by the University of Alabama Wind Ensemble conductedby the late Gerald Welker. After twenty-two (22!) years away from the large symphonic band, working on numerous orchestral and chamber commissions, Knehans is more than anxious to return to writing for the powerful, exciting, colorful ensemble. In the twenty-two years since his last large band piece, his musical aesthetic/language has become more optimistic and ‘audience friendly’, as heard in his critically acclaimed and award winning disc of orchestral works CONCERTOS. This Global Music Awards Gold Medal-Best of Show winning disc was hailed by Fanfare Magazine which noted: “This is music of tremendous imagination.Knehans scores with a masterly hand, his sound paintbrush unerringly hitting the mark. " Knehans looks forward to turning his “sound paintbrush” towards the wind ensemble yet again in this major new piece.
