ae69—Heat-for Trombone and Piano

In late 2012 my colleague Timothy Anderson requested a new work for trombone from me. In thinking about the work I decided upon a pretty traditional format of trombone and piano. However, upon beginning the work, it became clear to me that creating a work in which these sonorities combined well was a little challenging. This led to the use of the piano as a quite percussive instrument and the use of lots of clustertype harmonies.

Heat seemed an appropriate title for a work that is demanding and virtuosic for the trombonist and not without some ‘hot’ passages that are both showy and dramatic. The work was completed in Cincinnati in August, 2013.
