ae72—Temple-for Solo Flute

In 2014 I was lucky to meet the wonderful Polish flutist Iwona Glinka during a trip to Athens. She was generous to let me hear recordings of her playing my music and in thanks I wrote her this work.

The title of the work reflects that recent visit to Greece and exposure to the awe inspiring iconic ruins in Athens. The works materials, structure and expression are modeled after the serene, balanced grandeur of the various ancient ruins in Greece. The repositioning, repetition and slight transformation of materials also pays homage to the fractured symmetry
and damaged balance of those remarkable structures. Finally, the title suggests even an ancient entertainment where a sole player may have serenaded a king or gods with a sole aulos.
